Detroit Pole Position: Strip Club Anthems

If you listen to music you know that there are some songs that are better than others and if you've ever been to a strip club you know there are some songs that the dancers dance better to than others. Some songs were apparently meant just for the dancers at the clubs, and don't think the strippers don't know that. The best songs are often coveted by the dancers. Many musicians and artists like to make a song just for the strip clubs. If you hear one, you'll know it! Over the years, there have been many, but only a handful really stick out in my mind. This list is by no means exhaustive, but has room for more... Enter Kelley Jean.

Kelley Jean has been in the Detroit scene for a long time. She started out going to house parties and bars before she was even legal, was involved in the theater, and by the age of 18 was shaking her money maker in Gentlemans clubs and doing adult modeling on the internet. "I got into anything and everything that I could get into, both in Detroit and outside of Detroit. So my entire life I was very well a big part of the Detroit 'scene'." Being a performer her entire life, and tired of working crappy jobs, she got into the adult entertainment scene. "I didn't mind dancing, and being topless wasn't a big deal "..because I had always been comfortable naked." She started adult modeling in 1997 which ultimately led to adult films. She got out of doing explicit adult work after 2002, with the exception of a fetish site for another 2 years, but completely retired from adult after that. She still occasionally does appearances as a feature dancer or singer at various clubs; adult and regular nightclubs, but mostly focuses on her own business, Motorcitydolls.net which arranges bachelor parties and non-nude photoshoots.

In 2006, she created and sang in a burlesque "Pussy Cat Dolls" style show which performed all around Detroit for several years. Meanwhile, she was collaborating with a producer from Flint, writing and recording tracks. Once she heard the results of their collaborative effort, she decided to turn her focus and efforts on the dance/techno music scene. At that point the burlesque show took a back seat. She said, "I genuinely love doing both, but I had a hard time depending on the other people involved with the burlesque project, with my dance music career, all I have to rely on is myself and I am dedicated and grounded enough to really make things happen, and I do!"

Her first cd was released January 22nd, 2010, titled "Technosexual". Like many up and coming bands, rappers and Detroit artists, she slangs them herself at her shows and sometimes at Motorcitydolls events. There was one particular track on this cd that got my attention, and that was "Ride It". The track was produced by Dan Diamond, with help from Londell and Maestro of Silent Riot. Kelley wrote the lyrics and recorded it on the spot. The entire song took 5 hours (over 2 days) to finish. The aptly named song fits well with the various activities associated with strip clubs, the most obvious being the pole. Then again, there are other things that come to mind as well!

She had posted it on Facebook recently, and that was where I discovered it. My first thought after listening to it was, "This could be the next strip club anthem." To be sure, its a dirty song. Raunchy Lil Kim style lyrics, very explicit, but just f'n cool! I immediately copied it (don't worry I'll buy the cd!) and decided to go to the source with my questions. When asked how she came up with the explicit lyrics, Kelley said, "I write 99% of my own lyrics. I am given a beat, I listen to it, then write whatever comes out of my head. Kinda crazy that my mind is so naturally DIRTY! I swear I don't go around talking like that in reality. It's like this sex crazy super slutty alter ego comes out of me once I am feeling a beat. My inner stripper speaks! LOL." Indeed, many of the best artists have a alter ego, or dual identity, and its that persona that allows them to tap into the most creativity and bring forth the best material. Kelley Jean rolls like that too. Its a fun track to listen to, entertaining, amusing, and dirty! You can almost picture the action at the club or anywhere this track + booze is bumping! "I've been told that it's the dirtiest song some people have ever heard!! And thats awesome! LOL", said Kelley.

I then asked her how her music has been recieved thus far, she said, "Everyone who hears the music loves it. I am not afraid to say the things that most of these strippers are already thinking. I have walked in their shoes so I think that they can really relate to where I am going with my music, and they can have a good time onstage dancing to it as well." When asked what her personal favorite stripper anthems were, she said, "I would have to say that my favorite artists for a stripclub would be: Dan Diamond, Hypercrush, Peaches, Lord of Acid, and Benni Benassi." "Pretty much anything by any of them is sexy stuff." I was not expecting to hear that, since I've never heard of any of those people, but then I'm not a strip club expert either! ;) My list is perhaps dated, but hey, I know what I like and I'm resistant to change!

Since the track is only a handful of weeks old, she has only performed it live once, but plans to promote and play more shows this summer. "I performed this onstage at PANTHEION CLUB in Dearborn like 2 days after it was recorded. The crowd went absolutely wild, and everyone had great things to say about it after I got offstage. I am looking forward to getting more plays at clubs this summer. Believe me when I go out, I always have a copy of 'RIDE IT' with me as well as a copy of my 1st cd, 'TECHNOSEXUAL'."

So what are your plans from here on out? Whats next for Kelley Jean? "We are filming 3 music videos this summer: The first is for 'Ride It' and will be filmed in downtown Detroit in various locations. I can't explain the theme to you because its pretty complicated, so you have to wait and see it! Shot and edited by Jimi Custer. The 2nd is going to be shot and edited by Brian Hendrix, this video will be filmed at the haunted Capitol Theater in Flint, Mi. and is for the song 'Tell Me You Want Me'. The theme is: old movie star comes back and haunts people at this sweet old theater. The 3rd video will be shot and edited by Michael Vanderpool and will be filmed at Barnstormers in the Western Saloon style room. This video is for the song 'Hands On My Hips' and will have a cowgirl theme and will feature some of my hot Motorcitydolls.net models as well as myself! Hopefully I will have some big shows booked for this summer, I am looking forward to whatever comes next for me and my music!"

Now dear reader, treat yourself to "Ride It" and make sure you have it ready for your next bachelor party. You will most likely want to request it at your next visit to the club because I'm willing to bet it gets the party started, if ya know what I mean!

And now for my super short list of Best Strip Club Anthems!

1. "After Dark" by Tito & Tarantula

Please don't tell me you don't know the song? Bust out From Dusk till Dawn and watch Salma Hayek do the sexiest, captivating, jaw dropping strip tease and that should refresh your memory. It might not be an "anthem" per se, but its dam awesome in my book!

2. "Girls, Girls, Girls" by Motley Crue

This is a no-brainer. Its gotta be on every playlist. This is a certified strip club anthem.

3. "Dirrty" - Christina Aguilera

Back when Xtina was all ho'd out, she put out this naughty lil number, with the video featuring our then American Sweetheart wearing assless chaps and gettin' dirrty in a psuedo orgy with some sweaty dudes. It's got a good beat, and there's a fair chance your stripper will also be wearing assless chaps so it makes the list

4. "In love with a Stripper" by T-Pain (not really a fan)

If it walks like a duck, it must be a duck, right? I heard the song and I can take it or leave it, but I'm sure there are some girls that can work it to this, but I just don't see anyone makin' it rain to this...

5. "Ride It" by Kelley Jean

Yes, its brand new, but dammit, it makes my short ass list because its all that! This could be the next stripper anthem!

*Honorable mention:

"Stripper Song" by Wyclef Jean

Its a catchy lil song, and I gotta mention it for the name alone!
